We have a large range of art deco bronzes at Canonbury Antiques – the 1920s has to be my favourite era for many reasons. The period seems to have a youthful exuberance that manifests it so well to the bronze form. Egyptian dancers, silent movie film stars, erotic dancers, flapper girls – the popular studies of most art deco sculpturists – illustrates the eras fascination with lithe athleticism in the idealised female form. Most of these art deco bronzes are on display in our Hertfordshire showroom so please come and pay us a visit.
Poertzl’s art deco bronze is that classic piece with the tall and elegant woman flanked by the pair of elongated borzoi dogs. Classic work which somehow encapsulates the whole 1920s in one fair swoop.
What really drew me to this art deco bronze is the fact that it’s a male statue – most deco bronzes are of the female form so I was really drawn to this unusual piece by Leyendecker. Of course the male smoking in his 1920s suit is expertly created.
This is perhaps the piece de resistance when it comes to art deco bronzes – the famed Clarte statue of the Biba like girl holding aloft the glass orb from whence the light omits. Such a beautiful work that will be the talking point to any collection
